The Australian Veterans Scholarship Timor-Leste (AVSTL), running from 2017 to 2019, provided vocational educational scholarships for direct descendants of Timorese Veterans. The AVSTL was an initiative of Australian Veterans in solidarity with the people of Timor-Leste, contributing to Australia’s ‘Debt of Honour’.
In WW2 many Timorese gave everything they had, 60,000 lost their lives, for the survival & mission of stranded Australian soldiers. Since 1999, Australian soldiers have been provided similar hospitality, security and friendship, on operations and as returning veterans. Australian and Timorese Veterans stand united, with hope and conviction, for a future that is bright, just, and peaceful for the next generation of both our countries.
The scholarship was partnership with the Timor-Leste Veterans Task Force and East Timor Development Agency.
As a progression of community development assistance in Timor-Leste, Timor Awakening embarked on the building of a rural English language and vocational training facility in Daisua, Same, very close to the historic town of Betano. Progress of the school project, Veterans Educational Training Scheme (VETS), can be seen on this website. Scholarships and support to education to rural poor Timorese can be achieved by donating to the Veteran Training Centres, through VETS.
